  • 4th Grade Pioneer Day

4th Graders in Mrs. Archer’s 4th Grade celebrated Pioneer Day on May 8, 2024. Students dressed for the part, with boys wearing hats and suspenders and girls wearing long dresses, aprons and bonnets.  The day was packed full of fun pioneer activities. Students enjoyed writing with feather pens and ink, reciting poetry, making butter, square dancing and playing pioneer games such as Hopscotch and Graces. Each student was asked to pack a lunch that would be similar to a pioneer lunch. Many of them chose to bring fruit, bread and dried jerky, and some of them even carried it in a pail!  Pioneer Day is a tradition among 4th Graders. Students have been studying about pioneer life and the hardships that many homesteaders faced.  This is a culmination project for the end of the year, which allows students to experience what life was like during this time period and to have a lot of fun while doing it!

  • FRIEND ELECTRIC CAR COMPLETES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON

Friend Electric Car Has completed another successful season.  Their first race, April 12 took place in Pacific Junction Iowa.  The 13 car won first place completing 23 laps on the 1.4 mile track, setting a new track record.  Car number 12 took 4th place after being spun out and knocked out of the race for 18 min and only managing 17 laps.

April 20 the team headed to UNL East Campus in Lincoln.  They had a very good showing with the 12 car taking 1st completing 78 laps and crushing the old track record of 75 laps.  Car 13 took 3rd, missing 2nd by one second and completing an impressive 77 laps on the .42 mile track.

April 27 we went to Hastings, racing at the Hastings Motor sports Park  which is a 1 mile road course and our favorite track because of its smooth surface and wide turns.  Car 12 took first place completing 34 laps besting the old track record of 33 laps previously held by Friend.  Car 13 also beat the old record by 56 seconds, getting 2nd place.

May 4 the final race of the season was held in Wayne at a small .23 mile oval.  Friend again performed well, car 12 placed 1st completing 155 laps.  Car 13 completed 144 laps placing 3rd after spending a few minutes in the pits after a black flag penalty for overly aggressive driving.  Friend 13 car also took home  Highest Season Mileage Award which is given to the car which completed the most race miles in the season.

It was a good season in which we set new track records at 3 of the four races we attended; all track records are currently held by Friend.  The team represented Friend Public School with class and truly made their coach proud!  The Friend Electric Car Team participants include: Jordon Lawver, Jake Leif, Mason Semler, Jacob Weber, Will Vyhnalek, Jacob Klooz, Preston Knollenberg, and Chase Paulsen.
